Reservation #Critical View
Cancer for the Indian Economy
Disclaimer: "Nobody is hereby intentionally pointed out in the article below. If somehow the constitutional rights of anybody is violated, I am very much sorry for that. It has not been written with a intention to hurt anybody. It is just a critical view on the system of reservation in India."
It had been 74 years now after India got her independence from British colonialism. But the question arises why till now after so many years India is not able to stand as a developed country, why India is still underdeveloped? Answer to this question is- Indian economy is seriously suffering from cancer. And this cancer is in the form of RESERVATION. In the earlier times orthodox Indians believed superstitions and discriminated the lower caste and the lower-class people. To form equality, the national assembly framed the constitution giving special reservations and status to the lower caste people, but these were not permanent policies. But due to ignorance these reservation systems are still standing as a permanent pillar of education.
In the last 5 decades the effects of reservation in the minds of non-reserved students increased very dramatically. Even after having merit these non-reserved students are lacking behind. Amazingly in the study of the most responsible profession that is Medical Sciences and Engineering these reservations are not restricted at all. Can you imagine of putting your body in front of a non-merit doctor who has just got 45% in his HS? Can you too imagine of sitting under a roof which is designed by an architect who has just got 45% in his HS? Awkward right! But that is the truth of Indian education system. Now, it doesn't mean that a student belonging to a lower caste is always poor in his or her studies. There are uncountable numbers of students who belongs to lower castes but are brilliant in their studies.
What was the actual moto of providing such a system of reservation? It was because the lower caste people had come through a very sorrowful past because of discrimination by the higher caste people and they were considered to be socially backward. But, can you imagine of such a discrimination in this 21st Century? Then why the same system of reservation is still in formulation. In support I would like to give an example, let’s consider a doctor who belongs to a lower caste. After struggling a lot and after having too much hard work he got a chance to sit in the medical entrance examination. And he too got some privilege for belonging to a lower caste. After his graduation completed, he became a very good doctor.
Now, the main twist starts. He had a son (let his name be A) who grew with a silver spoon in his mouth but poor in his studies. And, he had a friend (let his name be B) who belonged to a higher caste but he was from a very poor family and he is the only support for his parents after his father retired as a sweeper from a hospital. But fortunately, the boy B was smart and serious about his studies. Now, after a month both of their HS result came out. The boy A got just 47% and the boy B got 90%. Both of them gave the medical entrance exam together. The boy B didn't get a seat even after performing very good in the entrance exam but the boy A even after performing very poor in his entrance exams he got a seat in the medical college because he belonged to a lower caste. Now, think, who is the actually desired student for the seat in the medical college, one who belonged to a lower caste but from a aristocratic family and poor in his studies or one who belonged to a higher caste but from a poor family and serious in his studies? But our education system says, one who belongs to a lower caste should get the seat regardless of his merit. This the present scenario of the Indian education system. Due to these reasons only, the children who can afford, moves abroad for his or her studies because there, regardless of his or her caste they get seat on basis of their merit and there is where the actual identification of talent is done.
Due to these reasons Indian education system can be asked with a question- is it the way of education system a country should have? A system in which you put the plausible and talented students in the waiting list and give the seats to some other students who are weak in their studies, just because they belong to a lower caste. In this situation who will try to study in India even if they are provided with the best faculty? Who will come and invest in such a nation where the education is given on the basis of caste? These are the question marks which are till now not been answered. And the day when we will be able to remove these question marks, we the Indians will stand as the world's strongest economy.
